The establishment of community clinics made it possible for uninsured people to access quality and affordable healthcare. You can now find a whole health clinic quickly in most American states. A holistic treatment center is a cheaper alternative to significant hospital and outpatient clinics. These community healthcare centers are in low income or high poverty areas such as:
- Inner cities
- Remote rural areas
- Areas with increased unemployment
- Locations hit by the economic recession
History of community clinics
In 2002, community clinics grew in number after receiving funding from the Bush administration. First, President Bush envisioned increasing community health care centers by 1200 to double the number of uninsured people seeking affordable health care. After that, the Recovery Act Investment poured more funding that catered to new clinics' conduction and operation costs. As a result, over 2.1 million more people could access quality whole health treatment by a whole health doctor in underprivileged areas.
Between 2007 and 2009, the US faced an economic recession that causing lots of people to lose their jobs. As one of the economic recovery plans, the Obama administration ensured community clinics received adequate funding to cater to the increased number of uninsured people depending on whole health hospitals or healthcare clinics.
Characteristics of Community clinics
All community clinics must meet four mandates;
1) Locate and serve high-needs individuals
Community healthcare centers must prioritize healthcare for the increasing percentage of people living in poverty. Also, States and counties must set up community clinics in areas with a limited number of physicians, increased infant mortality, and whose demographic has more elderly than young people.
2) Serve everyone regardless of financial status.
Community clinics have a mandate to provide quality care to everyone regardless of income. It must also come up with health care plans that are compatible with one’s income bracket. Under this requirement, anyone, even the homeless, can access free medical care at any time.
3) Provide comprehensive care
One of the pillars of community clinics, which is also their advantage, is their ability to provide comprehensive health care. Besides the primary medical care provided by major hospitals, community clinics also offer specialized care like cardiac, orthopedic, and podiatric care. Community healthcare centers also provide dental and mental health care, including supportive services like care coordination, case management, and nutritional education. These clinics should also provide ambulance services for patients in critical condition.
4) Regulated by a community board
Every community clinic must have a board of directors managing its operations. According to law, 51% of board members should be local individuals that receive healthcare from the said facility. The board has the power to approve budgets, establish policies, and hire and fire clinic CEOS.
Benefits of community clinics
Underprivileged persons have had access to quality healthcare thanks to community clinics. During the 2009 recession, part of the emergency funds raised by the Obama administration benefited the expansion of community clinics. By 2010, over 20 million Americans received quality and subsidized health care, with the majority being homeless people and migrant farmworkers.
Despite the recession, the increase of community clinics sparked a rise in economic revenue. In addition, the clinics employed more physicians and caregivers while complimentary businesses emerged to serve the thriving healthcare industry.
Community clinics thrive today thanks to available funding and a localized management system efficiently. As a result, over 20 million people benefit from community healthcare centers that provide comprehensive care that rivals modern hospitals.
